The Difference Between Being Validated and Being Seen
Validation vs. Being Seen
Validation feels good. When someone says, “You’re right” or “You did well,” it reassures us. But validation is not the same as being seen.
Validation focuses on what you’ve done. Being seen focuses on who you are.
Surface vs. Depth
A friend can validate your struggles by saying, “Yes, that was unfair.” But being seen means they pause, look into your eyes, and say, “I can tell this really hurt you — and I see the strength it took to share it.”
Validation soothes the surface. Being seen reaches deeper. And the reason so many of us feel unsatisfied, even when validated, is because what we truly crave is that deeper reflection.
Why We Settle
Many of us settle for validation because it feels safer than revealing ourselves enough to be seen. To be seen requires vulnerability — and with it, the risk of rejection.
